Garden Treasure

Over time in this business you tend to acquire a number of plants that mostly passed around between plant collectors, the majority of which are never for sale. Many of these plants are essentially unobtainable. Lots of luck finding any of them at your local garden center, or for that matter anywhere. These are mostly things that are in short supply and not cheap. I suspect most will sell out and may not be offered again for many years. Between hope and change, and the economy we have decided to part with a few very choice things. Check back from time to time as the listing will change.

Oxalis ennaephylla 'Sheffield Swan'

Oxalis ennaephylla 'Sheffield Swan'

A choice Peter Erskine introduction from the Falklands , (I believe Kath Dryden actually named it), Sheffield Swan was his boat that was sunk by an exocet missle, Peter has been out to the nursery and stands out as one of the best plantsmen I have ever met. Large white flowers with a green eye, it is a bit slow to increase but worth the wait.

Actaea (cimicifuga) pachypoda ‘Misty Blue’

Actaea (cimicifuga) pachypoda ‘Misty Blue’ I still prefer the name Actaea pachypoda, fleshy fruited Cimicifuga, ba humbug; this has outstanding bluish foliage and is otherwise typical of the species with showy white berries.

An outstanding Solomon’s Seal from Yinger, unlike the common variegated form this has a silvery streak down the center of each leaf. Everyone who has seen our stock plants has begged for a division. Trust us, once you plant it your friends will start bugging you to dig it up and carve them off a piece.

Sanguinaria canadensis FL PL

Sanguinaria canadensis FL PL

One of the most beautiful spring wildflowers the double forms of bloodroot are legendary. The huge fully double flowers are much less ephemeral than the single forms. We have a couple of clones that differ primarily in bloom time, opening a week or so apart. This is the early clone. We have had clumps of this disappear from the garden with the holes neatly filled in and the leaf litter carefully sifted back. Clever woodchucks?

Disporum longistylum ‘Green Giant’

Disporum longistylum ‘Green Giant’

This stunning woodlander was found and named by noted plant explorer, Dan Hinkley in Sichuan Province, China. It’s Robust, 8’-10’ bamboo-like shoots emerge in shades of pink, white and green, maturing to deep green. Fragrant branched sprays of creamy-white flowers unfurl like nodding bells with the new growth each spring; flowers are followed by glistening black fruit in fall. It was originally a D. cantoniense cultivar along with Disporum ‘Night Heron’ however BLEDDYN Wynn-Jones has identified both of them as D. longistylum. This came to us from Dan when Heronswood was still a cutting edge nursery and we liked our stock plant so much we couldn’t bring ourselves to cut it up. Dawn took a machete to it last spring and now we have a few to offer, this thing is not a fast multiplier.____ZONE 7 maybe 6 with protection
